About this scan

An obstetric ultrasound is a scan during pregnancy. In early pregnancy it can confirm the pregnancy, check the heartbeat, estimate how many weeks pregnant you are, and see whether there is more than one baby.

Later in pregnancy, scans are used to check the baby’s growth and position, the placenta and the amount of fluid around the baby. Ultrasound does not use radiation and is routinely used throughout pregnancy. Your doctor will advise which scans you need and when.

What happens during the scan

Step 1: You lie comfortably and the abdomen is uncovered.

Step 2: Gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the abdomen.

Step 3: The baby, heartbeat, placenta and fluid are checked and measurements are taken.

Step 4: The findings are explained and a report is prepared for your doctor.

If you have sudden or severe symptoms, please seek urgent medical care.

In early pregnancy you may be asked to come with a full bladder; later in pregnancy this is usually not needed. Our team will advise when you book.
Bring your previous scan reports and pregnancy records.
