About this scan
An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of the organs in your abdomen, including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and major blood vessels.
It is one of the most common scans requested to look into abdominal pain, swelling, abnormal blood tests or digestive symptoms. It is painless, involves no radiation, and a report is prepared for you and your doctor after the examination.
What happens during the scan
A general overview — our team will guide you through each step of your examination.

Step 1: You lie comfortably on your back and the abdomen is uncovered.

Step 2: A water-based gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the skin.

Step 3: You may be asked to take a deep breath and hold it, or turn onto your side.

Step 4: The gel is wiped off and a report is prepared for you and your doctor.

If you have sudden or severe symptoms, please seek urgent medical care.
You are usually asked not to eat for about 6–8 hours before the scan, so the gallbladder can be seen clearly. Water is normally fine — our team will confirm when you book.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to move aside.
Bring any referral, previous reports and a list of your medicines.
You can eat, drink and return to normal activities straight after the scan.

Why do I need to fast before an abdominal ultrasound?
Eating makes the gallbladder contract and produces gas in the bowel, both of which make the organs harder to see. Fasting helps give clearer images.
How long does the scan take?
Most abdominal scans take around 15–30 minutes, depending on what needs to be examined.
