About this scan

Fatty liver means extra fat has built up in the liver. It is very common and is often linked to weight, diabetes, high cholesterol or alcohol use. Many people have no symptoms, and it is often first suspected from routine blood tests.

An ultrasound shows the brightness, size and texture of the liver, which helps your doctor judge whether fat is present and how pronounced the changes appear. The scan can be repeated over time to follow changes as you work on diet, weight and other health factors with your doctor.

What happens during the scan

Step 1: You lie on your back with the upper abdomen uncovered.

Step 2: Gel is applied and the probe is moved over the right side of the abdomen, below the ribs.

Step 3: The brightness, size and texture of the liver are examined, and nearby organs are checked.

Step 4: The findings are recorded in a report for your doctor.
