About this treatment

Plaque that is not removed by brushing can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed at home and can contribute to gum inflammation (gingivitis) and gum disease.

Scaling removes tartar from the teeth above and just below the gum line, and polishing smooths the tooth surfaces to help reduce stains and plaque build-up. Your dentist will advise how often a professional cleaning is right for you.

Mild sensitivity or gum tenderness can occur for a few days and usually settles on its own.
Keep brushing gently but thoroughly, including along the gum line.
