About this treatment

Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and make it more resistant to decay. A fluoride varnish may be applied to the teeth as part of preventive care.

Fissure sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where natural grooves can trap food and bacteria. They are often recommended for children’s permanent back teeth. Your dentist will advise whether these treatments are suitable.

What happens during treatment

Step 1: The dentist checks the teeth and decides which treatment is suitable.

Step 2: For fluoride varnish, the teeth are dried and a thin layer of varnish is painted on — this takes only a few minutes.

Step 3: For fissure sealants, the tooth surface is cleaned and prepared, then the sealant is applied to the grooves and hardened.

Step 4: Sealants are checked at later visits and repaired if needed.

After fluoride varnish, follow your dentist’s advice about eating, drinking and brushing for the rest of the day.
Sealants do not replace brushing — keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
