About this treatment

Sometimes a tooth needs to be removed — for example if it is badly decayed, broken beyond repair or causing other problems. Wisdom teeth that are impacted or repeatedly infected may also need to be removed.

Your dentist will examine the tooth, explain why removal is recommended, discuss any alternatives, and give you aftercare instructions to support healing.

What happens during treatment

Step 1: The tooth is examined, and an X-ray may be taken to check its roots and position.

Step 2: Local anaesthetic is given so the area is numb.

Step 3: The tooth is carefully removed; some wisdom teeth may need a minor surgical procedure.

Step 4: A gauze pad is placed to help a blood clot form, and you are given aftercare instructions.

Bite on the gauze as instructed, and avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully or using a straw for the first 24 hours.
Avoid smoking, as it can delay healing.
Contact us if you have heavy bleeding, pain or swelling that gets worse after a few days, or a fever.
